How We Rank River Cruises
Published criteria, verified awards and an honest note on how we are funded.

Our Four Core Criteria
| Criterion | What we look at | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Inclusions | Drinks, gratuities, excursions, Wi-Fi, transfers and air offers in the standard fare | Determines the real cost of the trip and how many extra bills you face |
| Ship age and design | How new or recently refurbished the fleet is; window and balcony design | Newer river ships generally offer more space, bigger windows and better layouts |
| Cabin size | The size of standard cabins and the share of suites and real balconies | River cabins are small by nature, so extra space makes a big difference |
| Itinerary range | How many rivers, departure dates and excursion choices a line offers | More choice means a better chance of the trip you actually want |
Fit for the Travel Style
A ranking only makes sense for a particular kind of trip, so for each list we also judge fit: for families, whether there are dedicated family departures; for active travelers, whether bikes and active excursions are part of the daily choice; for first-timers, how easy the logistics are. On each list we say which criteria we weighted most.
How We Treat Awards
- We only mention awards from well-known, independent publications, and only after we have checked the result.
- We always give the award year, because results change from year to year.
- Awards inform our lists but don’t decide them: reader surveys measure overall satisfaction, not fit for a particular style of trip.
Currently cited: the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2026 river cruise line top 10, and the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards 2025, in which Viking ranked No. 1 for rivers.
What We Don’t Do
- We don’t publish fares. Prices and offers change constantly; you get a current quote instead.
- We don’t invent statistics, ratings or reviews.
- We don’t list lines that no longer operate, and we don’t promote river cruises in Russia or Ukraine, which US-market lines are not selling.
How We Are Funded
Best River Cruises is part of the Smart Traveler network. When you request a quote, our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise handle your booking and may earn a commission from the cruise line you choose. That never costs you extra, and it is why the quote service is free.

When We Update
We review our picks when lines launch new ships, change what their fares include, or open new rivers, and when major awards are announced. If you notice something that has changed, our cruise advisors would like to hear about it.
Want the head-to-head detail behind a pick? Our sister site River Cruise Lines compares the lines side by side, and Mister River Cruise walks you through choosing step by step.
